Newton Throwback: A Summer Camp with Staying Power

Frank A. Day gave $5000 to start a summer camp and it continues more than 100 years later

Camp Frank A. Day opened in 1916 as a YMCA summer program subsidized by a bequest of $5,000 from Frank A. Day of Newton (also the namesake of Newton’s F.A. Day middle school). The camp’s first season attracted nine boys to East Brookfield, Mass. They lived in tents, played baseball, went boating, did woodcraft, and many other activities. Apparently, the original program was a success because the camp is now in its 101st season. Learn more about F.A. Day during our walking tour, "Who Inspired Our School Names?", July 30 at the Newton Cemetery.
