NMS Students Spread Positive Message on International Peace Day

NMS Student Council distributes hand-made dreamcatchers in Newton Centre, marking International Peace Day and their studies of North America

Each year, students at Newton Montessori School mark International Peace Day by sharing the important messages of peace and acceptance with fellow students and teachers, as well as the greater Newton community. Student council members choose a symbol for peace from the continent that the school is currently studying; this year is North America. Students studied the origins of the American Indian dreamcatcher, then built their own to share with all students during an outdoor peace circle this morning. They also created a number of smaller dreamcatchers.

After talking about the importance of peace and joining in the song “Sing Peace Around the World,” third and sixth graders went out into the Newton Centre community to spread the message of peace by giving their handmade dreamcatchers to local businesses and residents. From a Green Line T driver and the Sherwin Williams employees to Sandwich Works, Newtonville Books, and the manager of Boston Private Bank and Trust, they shared their important message and brightened several peoples’ days.

Newton Montessori School wishes you all a happy and inspiring International Peace Day!
