1. Newton for Everyone citizen petition aims to force City Council to discuss, vote on new zoning changes (newtonbeacon.org) — Newton residents are being asked to sign a "Newton for Everyone" petition that would force the City Council to publicly debate and vote on major zoning changes, including more multifamily housing and taller buildings in business and manufacturing districts. Supporters say reusing underused industrial space and allowing up to four units on some lots could boost housing, walkability, and tax revenue, and may shape next year's local elections.
   

2. Large tree crashes into Newton backyard - Boston News, Weather, Sports (whdh.com) — A severe storm sent a massive tree crashing into a Newton family's backyard, covering the entire space with debris but fortunately injuring no one, including two children who were home. The homeowner expects cleanup and fence repairs to cost several thousand dollars and says the family was surprised by how intense the storm became.
   

3. City upholds denial for Newton woman's miniature horse permit (wcvb.com) — A Newton woman has been ordered to remove her miniature horse, Clover, after city health officials ruled the animal counts as a "Large Animal" and doesn't meet manure storage setback rules on her Auburndale property. Despite earlier city permits and an appeal, the Health and Human Services director upheld the license denial, giving her 21 days to relocate the horse.
   

4. Mismatched Priorities Extend Lab Market Woes (bankerandtradesman.com) — Newton figures into a broader look at Greater Boston's lab market as LabShares' 44,000-square-foot shared lab facility in the city hosts more than 35 biotech companies seeking flexible space. With traditional landlords still pushing long leases, incubators and shared labs in Newton, Watertown, and Cambridge are filling a critical gap for startups that can't yet afford or justify their own full-scale labs.
