Cooling Centers Extending Hours to Provide Heat Relief

Norwood officials have extended hours at multiple locations for residents to beat the heat this week.

The Civic Center, 165 Nahatan St., will have extended hours today, closing at 9 p.m. It also will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. If residents plan to seek relief during extended hours on either day from 7 to 9 p.m., call (781) 762-0466.

Outdoor pools also remain open Monday through Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 7 p.m.

The Senior Center, 275 Prospect St., also is open today and tomorrow with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. If residents plan on seeking relief here during extended hours from 4 to 9 p.m., call (781) 762-1201.

Finally, community centers at Housing Authority complexes will remain open until 9 p.m. for any resident wanting to cool down. These locations include Maguire Housing, 10 Brookview Circle; Frank Walsh Housing, 40 William Shyne Circle; Willow Wood Terrace, 14 Adams St.; and Nahatan Village, 86 Nahatan St.

A heat advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. this evening as temperatures are forecasted to rise near 100 degrees with heat indexes near 105. An excessive heat watch remains in effect for even hotter temperatures Friday. 

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible," according to a statement.
