Quincy Man Sentenced After Making Fake School Shooting Threat

The man sent a letter to federal officials falsely claiming his ex-wife's boyfriend was planning a school shooting in South Boston.

BOSTON — A Quincy man was sentenced to almost six months in prison after sending a letter that threatened a school shooting in South Boston, according to the U.S. Justice Department. Clebio, De Lima, 43, a Brazilian national living in Quincy without documents, was convicted on two counts of making false statements to federal authorities, after pleading guilty last month. He was sentenced Thursday and faces deportation, federal authorities said.

In February 2018, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said they received an unsigned letter written in Portuguese. The letter said a man named "Mario" bought two guns, was looking to buy more and was going to carry out an attack on a South Boston school.

Federal authorities said the letter concluded by saying, "I invite you to take action, I trust in you. Thank you for the great security of this country."

Investigators later determined that the threats in the letter weren't legitimate, and that De Lima sent the letter to the USCIS hoping that federal authorities would arrest his ex-wife's boy friend, prosecutors said.

When police interviewed De Lima, he lied, saying he knew nothing about the letter, according to prosecutors. But he then admitted to FBI agents that he sent the letter, federal authorities said.
