North Shore Schools Mixed On Mask Decisions: Patch Weekender

For many students and teachers on the North Shore, the return from vacation will be the first mask-optional school day in nearly two years.

SALEM, MA — Many schools will have a dramatically different look than at any point over the past two years when students and staff return from vacation to mask-optional classrooms across the North Shore next week.

While Swampscott will wait until March 14 to drop its mask order, and the Salem School Committee is set to make a decision on the mandate that is still in place in that district next Monday night, Feb. 28 will be the day that students in Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody and several other districts will have the mask-free option for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis closed schools in March 2020.

Read some of the reasons behind each district's decision, and anything you may have missed on the North Shore this past week in this special edition of Patch 3-Day Weekender:

All Marblehead Schools To Go Mask-Optional On Feb. 28

"If we start to try to take some of that back it leaves me sitting in a conundrum and I worry that our teachers and our administrators are going to have to fall back into that (mask-policing) role.," Marblehead School Committee Chair Sarah Gold said. "It's not what school should be about at this point — discipline over a mask."
