Shrewsbury Celebrates Remodeled Recreation Building On Main Street
The property is the oldest publicly maintained building in town.

SHREWSBURY, MA — The town is set to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new building this month.
The Recreation Department Building at 835 Main St. underwent renovations and is newly remodeled. The town will celebrate its reopening with a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Shrewsbury Select Board members, as well as Rep. Hannah Kane and Sen. Michael Moore, could be in attendance to celebrate the reopening. The event will begin with remarks from town staff and local officials. Afterwards, the new building will host an open house to invite residents to explore the space and sign up for recreation programs.

The property is the oldest publicly maintained building in town, and it began as a schoolhouse in 1858. It also served as a community center for veterans' groups, service organizations, and local Boy Scout Troops.
Funding for the renovations was secured as $625,000 in ARPA funds, $105,841 in Green Communities Grant Funding, and $ 250,000 in Capital Improvement Plan funds.

The newly updated facility will offer administrative offices and a 2,000-square-foot 'Great Room'. It's located next to Dean Park to link indoor and outdoor recreational programs in the town.
"This space offers a wonderful sense of continuity," commented Laurel Rossiter, Shrewsbury’s Director of Recreation. "We've heard so many stories from residents about attending community dances and events here decades ago. They are just as excited as we are to re-open this space, allowing the next generation to start making their own memories here.”
