Shrewsbury OKs Later Last Call During Summer Extension

Some Shrewsbury businesses with liquor licenses will be able to stay open an hour later this summer under a temporary state alcohol law.

SHREWSBURY, MA — Some Shrewsbury businesses with liquor licenses will be able to stay open an hour later this summer under a temporary state alcohol law.

The Select Board voted this week to opt in to the expanded service hours allowed under a new state pilot program, which permits municipalities to allow on-premises alcohol license holders to extend service by one hour, up to 3 a.m., through July 31, 2026. The board took up the issue at its Tuesday meeting, according to the meeting agenda.

Gov. Maura Healey signed the measure Monday, allowing cities and towns to extend last call by one hour and create designated public alcohol consumption districts through July 31, according to NBC10 Boston.

The Massachusetts House described the measure as a local-option pilot tied to major summer events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 250th anniversary celebrations. The law does not require cities and towns to participate, according to the Massachusetts Legislature.

Boston Stadium in Foxborough is scheduled to host seven World Cup matches between Jun. 13 and Jul. 9. Massachusetts 250 is also planning statewide events around the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, including Jul. 4 celebrations and Sail Boston 2026, according to MA250.

Establishments that want to use the extended hours will still be limited to one additional hour beyond the closing time set in their licenses.
