Shrewsbury Power Company To Give Away 500 Free Trees
The event is part of the town's 22nd Annual Arbor and Earth Day Celebration.
SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury could be getting greener this month, as Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations is giving away trees for free.
SELCO announced it will give away 500 locally purchased native trees to residents on a first-come, first-served basis later this month. The event is part of the town's 22nd Annual Arbor and Earth Day Celebration.
This year, SELCO is focusing on four specific native varieties. Each was chosen for its ability to thrive in Massachusetts soil, and the saplings range from 18 to 24 inches tall:

- Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) is known for its vanilla-scented white flowers, and is ideal for smaller yards. The tree will grow anywhere from 10 to 30 ft tall.
- Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a "wildlife powerhouse" that supports over 450 species of pollinators and birds. The large tree will grow anywhere from 50 to 80 ft tall, and produces beautiful spring blooms.
- Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) is a fast-growing shade tree resistant to many invasive pests. The large tree will grow anywhere from 55 to 80 ft tall and 40 to 55 ft wide. It has a pyramidal shape.
- Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a classic New England stalwart, famous for its deep red autumn leaves. The large tree will grow anywhere from 60 to 80 ft tall and 40 to 65 ft wide.
The giveaway is exclusive to SELCO customers. To snag a tree, you’ll need to bring a photo ID or a recent SELCO bill to prove residency. There is a limit of one tree per family.
The event is on Saturday, Apr. 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. at Shrewsbury Town Hall, located at 100 Maple Ave. SELCO said if it rains, the event will move to the Senior Center, at 98 Maple Ave.

The event will also feature activities for kids like games, crafts and giveaways, and an animal adventures show at 11 a.m.
