SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury Town Election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, and residents will vote on three key races.
Shrewsbury voters will elect two members to the five‑member Select Board, the executive branch of town government that works with the Town Manager and sets local policy and priorities.
The ballot now includes two incumbents, Beth Casavant and Carlos Garcia, and challenger Anand Sharma, each of whom shared their priorities with Patch.

Beth Casavant
Casavant has served multiple years on the Select Board and has been a Town Meeting Member since 2011, before joining the Board.

Casavant said she has championed initiatives to make local government more accessible, including quarterly newsletters, Select Board office hours, expanded opportunities for public comment and social media summaries of meetings.
She cites involvement in long‑term financial planning by extending the 2021 override beyond its original four-year timeline and revitalizing the Shrewsbury Development Corporation
Casavant emphasizes continued support for schools, public safety services and social programs that enhance the quality of life in town.

Carlos Garcia
Garcia is currently serving in his first term on the Select Board and serves as a Town Meeting Member from Precinct 1. He has been a resident for over two decades and is the first in his family to graduate from high school.
Platform & Priorities:
He is the Select Board's designee to the Affordable Housing Trust and the Form of Government Study Committee, and previously served on the Finance Committee.
He said he helped advance a new Private Road Maintenance Bylaw to improve safety and road maintenance standards.
Garcia has worked through the Affordable Housing Trust to support plans that expand housing options in town.
He helped lead efforts to position Shrewsbury as a more supportive place for seniors and caregivers.
Why He’s Running: Garcia says his lived experience and community work shape his belief that local decisions matter, especially when they affect families, seniors and those most in need.

Anand Sharma
Anand Sharma is a longtime Shrewsbury resident and an active volunteer in town government, participating in civic committees such as Spirit of Shrewsbury and the 300th Anniversary Committee.

Sharma says he is running to address rapid residential and commercial growth that, in his view, outpaces infrastructure and puts pressure on budgets and services.
He emphasizes carefully balancing development with conservation of green space and community character.
Sharma advocates for initiatives to support seniors, including tax relief programs.
He supports thoughtful economic development to attract businesses while maintaining Shrewsbury’s appeal.
