SHREWSBURY, MA — Beal Elementary School’s fire alarm system remains operational after two recent issues involving backup batteries and connected equipment, town officials said.

The first issue involved defective backup batteries in the fire alarm panel and required manufacturer support before it was resolved on June 2, 2026, according to Town Manager Kevin J. Mizikar. A separate issue on Tuesday involved a trouble signal from the radio signal booster system and several carbon monoxide sensors connected to the HVAC system, but officials said neither issue affected the overall function of the fire alarm system.

The Shrewsbury Fire Department was informed of both issues and worked with the Public Buildings Division on the first problem, according to Mizikar. The carbon monoxide devices remain operational and are undergoing standard calibration.

An electrical contractor evaluated the system after the June 9 issue and addressed minor problems, including tightening connections related to the radio signal booster, Mizikar said.

“The building remains safe to be occupied. The fire alarm system continues to function and will operate in the event of an emergency,” Fire Chief Seth Colby said in the town’s release.

The Fire Department also held a previously scheduled fire drill at the school Wednesday morning, and the system performed and reset as designed, according to the town.

“At no point did these issues compromise the safety of building occupants,” Mizikar said in the release.
