Where Are They Now?
Shrewsbury Patch gets reacquainted with former Shrewsbury High football captain John Kelly.

You were a captain for Shrewsbury in 2005, but you had an interesting path that led you to that point, including a few position changes. What position do you like best?
When I started high school I intended on being a quarterback but eventually found myself spending more time at linebacker. Then as a junior I started playing wide receiver and I really enjoyed that because I got the chance to start on both offense and defense.
Which do you like more? Offense or defense?

Defense. I got the chance to play with some other great linebackers during the 2004 season. Between Chuck Snowdon, Mike Vitols, and myself we racked up 307 tackles that season. That was a blast.
What is your best memory from your career as a Shrewsbury Colonial?

That same year when I was a junior we ended Wachusett's 13-game winning streak by beating them in overtime. I had 12 tackles and an interception in that one.
You ended up bringing your talent to the UMass Dartmouth. Did you enjoy your career as a Corsair more than your days as a Colonial?
No, playing at Dartmouth was a great time but there's nothing like playing high school football.
What was the biggest difference between playing football in high school and college?
In college I moved to strong safety. There was a lot more to learn. I had many different responsibilities as a strong safety, but I enjoyed playing there.
What do you do with your time now?
I work at the Staples corporate office as an operations coordinator. I wish the NFL worked out, but it'll do. I also dabble in slow-pitch softball.
Do you still play any sort of organized football?
I play for two flag football teams in Northboro and Worcester, and I am taking part in the Turkey Bowl coming up on Nov. 27. As long as my legs work, I intend to continue playing some form of football.
