Brandeis University professor Harleen Singh will speak about the immigrant story and women's role in the novels of the Indian Diaspora, specifically The Namesake. Questions of identity, religion, death, and returning will be discussed, as well as the relationship between the diasporic community and the homeland.
Harleen Singh is co-Chair of the South Asian Studies Program at Brandeis University. She teaches courses in Postcolonial Literature, Indian Film, Women's and Gender Studies, and Comparative Literature. She has published reviews and articles on fiction and film from India. She was born and educated in India, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego. Her interests include the Indian immigrant novel, sexuality and Indian film, the historical novel from India, and music from the Indian diaspora.
