Fall Introduction to Adobe After Effects at SCATV
This workshop is designed allow students to gain familiarity with the layout and controls of Adobe After Effects. Students will learn to use all the tools necessary to create a customized opening introduction to a real or hypothetical television show. Among the skills that will be learned will be graphic generation, shape layers, text integration, position, rotation and scale tracking as well as particle generation. Register here!
You will get the most out of this class if you create and design your own introduction for a show. The second and third class will offer the opportunity for students to show the projects they are working on and get feedback from the instructor and the students.
Instructor
Matthew Martino is the executive director of SVG Productions, a company dedicated to creating events and media both big and small. He has written and directed, and was lead editor on two feature films, The Drachen Recruitment Experiment and Chainsaw Maidens from Hell. He is a trained and recognized stunt performer with the Society of American Fight Directors and has developed The Action Hero School to train actors in stunt work. Along with his film work, he is the producer of The Armory of Horror – a live interactive Halloween Maze at the Arts at the Armory Center in Somerville.

Pre-requisite
It is highly recommended, but not required, that the students have a basic understanding of Abode Premiere before they take this class. It is a requirement that students be familiar with some editing software such as Final Cut Pro or Avid. Basic terms of editing will not be covered since this is not an introduction to editing. Rather, After Effects is designed to enhance editing projects created in video editing software.
Class 1 – Intro – the students will learn a bit about the instructor and see some of his recent work. The students will also give a bit of their background with editing. An introduction to the fundamentals of After Effects such as purpose and layout will be given. Basic controls will be explored while we create as begin to create a customized intro –

Homework – create your own intro (encouraged but not required)
Class 2 – Class will begin by showing any work students have created in the week between classes. Feedback will be given by both the instructor and the students to help guide the next phase of editing. Students are encouraged to ask questions about how they want to develop their project as well as to discuss difficulties they are having in creating their work. The class will continue to create custom special effects such as spinning text or flying logos.
Homework – Utilize notes to improve your introduction project. Try and add new techniques if you see fit.
Class 3 – Student work will again be shown and discussed by the instructor and other students. Questions are encouraged. In the final lesson we will add sound effects to the projects. Learn how to find free or affordable sound effects and music on line.
