Gov. Baker: Communities Decide How to "Ensure Harmony and Public Safety"

While the governor did not directly address sanctuary cities Wednesday, he said local governments would decide what's best for residents.

SOMERVILLE, MA – With the election of Donald Trump, a candidate who built his campaign largely on promises to crack down on illegal immigration, those who live in sanctuary cities have begun to wonder if their community will remain a safe haven for undocumented immigrants.

The president-elect has threatened in the past to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities, though it is unclear if he will enact such a policy once in office.

Meanwhile several elected officials across the country – including Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone – have said their communities will remain sanctuary cities regardless of presidential policy.

And that seems to be backed by Gov. Charlie Baker, who spoke to reporters Wednesday after meeting with the Republican Governors Association.

According to the Boston Globe, he said it was up to local officials to determine policy in their communities.

While he did not address sanctuary cities directly, he said, “the way local communities choose to ensure harmony and public safety in their own communities should be up to them," the Globe reported.
