Green Line Extension Construction Underway, Weekend Work Added

Daytime work on Saturdays began this week.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Construction on the Green Line Extension project is underway in Somerville and Medford, according to the project website. Abutters can expect to see ongoing excavation work, including soil excavation, trenching and pile installation in the Tufts University area in the coming weeks.

Neighbors may also notice increased construction vehicle traffic in the areas of Colby Street and Tufts as materials and equipment are delivered to and removed from the railroad right-of-way. Temporary fencing is also expected to be installed along the right-of-way.

Saturday daytime work was added to the schedule on Monday, June 26. Work will be completed Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., according to the latest update. The six-day work schedule may extend through the summer construction season and will include drilling piles and excavation work.

Residents in the area should expect moderate to high levels of noise during that time.

Keolis is overseeing completion of the Early Work packages, which will include ā€œtrack work, utility relocations, signal infrastructure, and associated drainage and earthwork improvements," according to the Somerville Journal.

The Early Work packages are expected to be completed by early 2018.
