3 Hospitalized After MBTA Bus Crashes Onto Lawn In Medford

MEDFORD, MA — Three people were taken to a hospital after an out-of-service MBTA bus crashed through an intersection and onto the lawn of a Medford home Thursday morning, according to MBTA Transit Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:07 a.m. as a 62-year-old MBTA employee was operating the bus eastbound on the Fellsway near Salem Street. MBTA Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan told Patch that investigators believe the operator suffered a medical emergency as he approached the intersection and was unable to stop.

Three vehicles were stopped at a red light when the bus struck the vehicle in front of it, pushing it into another vehicle. The bus continued through the intersection, struck a parked vehicle and veered over the sidewalk before eventually coming to a stop on the front lawn of a private residence.

The bus operator and two people who were inside vehicles struck during the crash were transported to a local hospital. Sullivan said the three were taken for precautionary and evaluative measures, and that there were no life-threatening or obvious injuries.

"On behalf of the entire MBTA organization, we are extremely grateful no one was seriously injured or worse," Sullivan told Patch. "We are very cognizant of what could have transpired."

MBTA Transit Police accident reconstruction investigators and detectives are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Sullivan said it would be inappropriate to comment further until that process is completed.
