Union Square bar hosts day of sour sips for sour (and sweet) souls

If Valentine’s Day leaves a sour taste in your mouth, The Independent in Somerville’s Union Square has a liquid cure that doesn’t involve Love Potion No. 9. The Indo’s “My Sour Valentine Brunch” gathering brings together bleeding hearts and the stony-hearted under one roof to share in a rare common affection: beer.
The Independent’s bar team will be tapping the kegs, popping the caps and flicking the tabs on a collection of rare sour beers fit for every palate. Highlights from The Independent’s “My Sour Valentine” exclusive roster of high-test suds include Smuttynose Smuttlabs: Smoked Peach Short Weisse and Smoked Cherry Stout Weisse; Green Flash Passion Fruit Kicker; Sloop Brewing Sauer Peach and Confliction; Allagash Nancy and Astrid; Evil Twin Brewing James Beer; Bear Republic Tartare Rogue; Ballast Point Sour Wench Blackberry Ale; and, Cambridge Brewing Company Cerise Cassée Barrel-Fermented Sour Wild Ale.
In between sips, nourish your soul with sweet and sour treats from The Indo’s signature brunch menu including Housemade Maple Donuts ($6); Croque Monsieur with crisp hot ham, Gruyère, béchamel, fried egg, Iggy’s sourdough and mesclun greens ($13); and, Grilled Grapefruit with a honey drizzle ($3).
