Landmark Somerville Music Club Is Being Torn Down

Johnny D's closed last year after nearly five decades in Davis Square.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Davis Square landmark Johnny D's is coming down. Demolition began this week on the Holland Street music club, a year and a half after its final show, local food blog Boston Restaurant Talk reported.

Johnny D's was first a bar, then a country music hall, then the spot for local and national acts once the Red Line rolled into town and the music room ballooned into a full restaurant. The club relied less on frills and more on the quality of its talent; it was always the menu of performers, rather than dishes, that kept Johnny D's a step ahead of its competition.

What's next for the site is anyone's guess. Late last year the Somerville Journal reported that Johnny D's owner Carla DeLellis had kept her liquor license and was toying with the idea of leasing the space to a new restaurant or keeping the license and opening a new bar.

Around that time the Zoning Board of Appeals also conditionally approved a proposal for a three-story addition with seven rental units and a ground floor reserved for commercial retail space.
