Man Makes a Break for It During Traffic Stop in Somerville: Police

A man claiming to be an Uber driver hightailed it out of there during a traffic stop Saturday, police said. He didn't get far.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A man claiming to be an Uber driver was charged with resisting arrest Saturday after he allegedly ran during a traffic stop. Nardeep Singh, 29, of Everett, was stopped by police at around 12:39 a.m. after pulling out of the Somerville No Touch Car Wash.

Police said Singh stopped in the parking lot, exited his black Nissan and walked closely past one of the other two vehicles in the lot. The occupant of that vehicle was already there prior to Singh's arrival and was standing at the rear of the car, police said.

The responding officer said Somerville No Touch Car Wash is known to police as a "high-crime area," being the site of a previous arrest and reports of suspected drug activity. Police pulled Singh over at the corner of Washington Street and Inter Belt Road after he exited the car wash lot.

When officers asked to see his license and registration, Singh allegedly replied,"I am an Uber driver, and I'm working." Police repeated the request and he echoed, "come on man, I'm an Uber driver," according to the report. After he was asked a third time, Singh gave police only his driver's license.

Singh appeared "extremely nervous," police said, and answered "no" when asked if he had anything officers should know about in the car. When police ran his license – discovering it was revoked – Singh allegedly got out of his car and ran down Washington Street before taking a right on Crescent Street.

Officers caught up to Singh and got him on the ground. Police said he resisted and they struggled to place handcuffs on him.

Once in custody, he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while revoked and resisting arrest.
