New Firefighter Joins Somerville FD

SOMERVILLE, MA – A new face has joined the ranks of the Somerville Fire Department. Joshua McCann, fresh off of graduating from the firefighting academy, has been assigned to Engine Company 6, Group 3. McCann was one of 36 graduates of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's 255th class.

The class, comprised of 34 men and two women, was announced Friday. The firefighters completed 10 weeks of training, including classroom instruction, physical fitness training, firefighter skills training and live firefighting practice.

Firefighters learn skills in firefighting, rescue operations, chemical and environmental emergency response and testing and maintaining equipment.

"This rigorous professional training provides our newest firefighters with the basic skills to perform their jobs effectively and safely," State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey said in a release.

The most recent graduating class represents 19 Massachusetts fire departments.
