Police: Bike Thefts on the Rise in Somerville

The rate of bicycle thefts is up 30 percent this summer in comparison to last year.

The rate of bicycle thefts take a noteworthy jump during the summer season, according to the Somerville Police Department.

According to the department, last summer, 50 percent of all bike thefts occurred between the months of June and August. Bike thefts this summer are running at a 30 percent higher rate through June and July than in 2014.

Thieves are zeroing in on places that have many public bike racks. The Davis Square and Assembly Row areas have seen many thefts. Residential areas on major streets are being targeted as well.

Nights and weekends are when bicycle thefts occur the most. Residents are urged to keep their bikes indoors while at home.

Police also urge bicyclists to avoid the use of cable locks because many thieves are using bolt cutters to lift the bikes. They recommend the use of heavy-duty chain locks or U-locks.
