CHRISTMAS WEEK TRASH PICKUP DAYS TO FOLLOW NORMAL SCHEDULE
Contractor to Make Next-Day Run All Week Long to Serve Homes Operating on Holiday Schedule
The City of Somerville learned ... that its trash contractor will be conducting trash pickup operations on its regular weekly schedule during the week after Christmas, but that crews would be performing a next-day pickup for residents who assume that the official observance of the Christmas holiday on Monday, December 26th, means a one-day delay in the normal trash schedule.
City officials are therefore requesting that residents put out their trash on their regular trash pickup day, but reassuring those residents that trash left on the curb one day later will also be picked up.
“It’s not as simple to explain as we’d prefer,” said Director of Constituent Services Steve Craig. “The bottom line is this: from Monday December 26th through Friday, December 30th, residents should try to stay on their regular trash schedule – but if they put out their trash the next day, it’ll still get picked up. ”The contractor, F.W. Russell and Sons Disposal, Inc., had earlier this year approved the City’s Environmental Guide, which indicated that trash pickup for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day would be conducted on a holiday schedule, with a one-day delay in pickups (i.e., if the regular trash day was a Tuesday, pickup would occur on Wednesday).
“We know that many people are going to be surprised to see the trucks out on the regular days, and they’ll call 311 to ask for information,” said Craig. “We’ll be ready, and we’ll be able to be reassuring, since folks who don’t get the word will still be able to put out their trash the next day. Craig emphasized that the week of Monday, January 2, 2012, has always been, and continues to be, as part of the regular, non-holiday pickup schedule.
