Significant Somerville Services Returning For Spring
Three major city services are coming back next month for residents.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city announced a return of three significant infrastructure services returning in April for the beginning of spring.
Street sweeping is slated to resume on Wednesday, April 1 and will continue on a schedule through the remainder of the calendar year. On designated street sweeping days, vehicles must be moved from the side of the street being swept, or else they could be ticketed or towed. According to the city, signs will be posted on each street.
“Somerville's street cleaning program is an essential public works program that not only keeps our city cleaner but also reduces the risk of flooding and icing due to clogged storm drains,” Mayor Jake Wilson said in a statement. “The penalty for not complying with street sweeping parking regulations is a $50 fine. Community members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the street sweeping schedule in areas where they park. The best way to do this is to read the signs on the street when you park.”

Biweekly yard waste pickup will reportedly begin on Monday, April 13 and continue through the middle of December. During the proper weeks, labeled yard waste barrels and paper bags can be placed alongside regular trash and recycling on collection days.

Also beginning in April, community members can drop off hazardous household waste at the Department of Public Works Yard at 1 Franey Road on the second Saturday of each month through November. A new addition this year however is two additional drop-off dates scheduled in the evenings of Thursday, April 23 and Thursday, Nov. 5 as bookends to the season.
