Somerville Break-In Suspect Busted After Foot Chase

Police officers and a K-9 unit chased the man through several yards before he was arrested.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The suspect in a breaking and entering in Somerville last week was chased down by police officers and a K-9 unit, police said. Filsdym Modan, 21, of Somerville, faces breaking and entering and resisting arrest charges after allegedly breaking into a Mystic Avenue apartment and leading police on a foot chase through the neighborhood.

Officers were called to a home on the 500 Block of Mystic Avenue around 10:46 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 18 for a report of a breaking and entering. A resident who knew the tenants of the apartment told police they had not been home, but he saw a man leave through one of the windows.

Police contacted the resident of the apartment, who told them no one was supposed to be inside, according to the police report. Officers searched the residence and found a bedroom window open with the screen pulled up. They could not determine if anything had been taken.

While speaking to the management company of the neighboring building, officers received a report that a person matching the description provided by the caller had been seen on the property. When the man saw police, he allegedly ran across Mystic Avenue and into the Ten Hills neighborhood. Two officers gave chase but lost sight of him on Bailey Road.

Police set up a perimeter around Bailey Road and Governor Winthrop Road between Shore Drive and Temple Road and requested the assistance of a K-9 unit. Officers and the dog searched the area, and the man was spotted again as he ran down Governor Winthrop road.

Several officers gave chase, and the man allegedly ignored commands for him to stop and get on the ground, according to the report. He ultimately complied when he came face-to-face with an officer who had his weapon drawn, police said.

The man, identified as Modan, told police he was was walking his bicycle through the Mystic Projects but never entered a building. Police found a black Lenovo Thinkpad in his backpack, which he said he had bought for $50 from someone in the housing development. He could not provide proof of purchase or information about the seller, according to police.

The resident who reported the break-in allegedly identified Modan as the suspect. He was placed under arrest and charged with breaking and entering daytime for a felony, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and trespassing.
