SOMERVILLE, MA — The mayor has called a community meeting next month to discuss two fatal crashes on Route 38 – Mystic Avenue – this year. The meeting will cover ongoing efforts to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Cheryl Pauline Richards, 52, was fatally struck in July on Mystic Avenue near the Stop & Shop. A month later, 68-year-old Kevin Dumont was fatally hit at the intersection of Mystic Avenue and Shore Drive. Authorities are considering both cases hit-and-runs.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has been working with city officials to plan a series of intersections and highway ramps where I-93, Route 38 and Route 28 – McGrath Highway – all meet. MassDOT will also be in attendance.
