Somerville Police Sgt. Michael McCarey Awarded Combat Cross
McCarey, the first Somerville officer honored in five years, was awarded for his actions during the Middlesex Federal bank robbery.

SOMERVILLE, MA — Somerville Police Sgt. Michael McCarey was awarded the Combat Cross Friday for his actions during the Middlesex Federal bank robbery May 1. The award is given to officers who have engaged in personal combat with an armed adversary under life-threatening circumstances, according to the Somerville Police Department.
Around 10 a.m. May 1, McCarey was on patrol on Highland Avenue when a man waved him down outside of the Middlesex Federal Savings Bank. McCarey went inside and saw the suspect yelling at the teller. The man had already fired a round in the bank and had a loaded revolver, police said.
McCarey identified himself and the suspect, later identified as Daniel Rosado, turned around and fired, according to police. The bullet missed McCarey, who chased after Rosado on foot. Authorities apprehended Rosado in Rhode Island three weeks later.
