Gang Member's Escape Short-Lived
The 18-year-old MS 13 gang member escaped federal custody Friday morning while being transported in Somerville. He was arrested in Everett.

SOMERVILLE, MA—A Somerville gang member has been arrested after escaping federal custody early Friday morning.
Gabriel Castillo Perez, 18, of Somerville escaped federal custody early on Friday while being transported in Somerville. According to the Somerville Police, Perez went to a former place of employment with his handcuffs still on. Perez was arrested in the Broadway area in Everett.

The Somerville Police said that Perez is a known criminal. Somerville PD and federal agencies are working together on the investigation. Residents were urged to be aware of the heightened police presence, particularly in the Union Square area.
Residents in the area received automated calls about Perez being on the loose. Police say they do not believe there is an immediate threat to the community. Perez was handcuffed when he escaped custody and was not armed.
