This Weekend in Somerville: TONS of Holiday Markets and Arts Events

Open studios, an alien-themed story slam, artist markets galore, and—'tis the season—The Slutcracker.

Slutcracker
Now in its fifth season, The Slutcracker is back at Somerville Theatre. It opens Saturday night and is performed on weekends throughout December. Read more about this burlesque adaptation of Tchaikovsky's ballet here.

Winter Craft Market in Union Square
Gifts include jewelry, photographs, handbags, unique electronic instruments, greeting cards, wreaths, dessert sauces, quilts, soap and more. It's Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Union Square.

Vernon Street Open Studios
Vernon Street Studios, a maze of artist work spaces in a huge, old brick factory building in the heart of Somerville, with creaky wooden floors and fun nooks and crannies, is hosting a holiday open studios event on Saturday and Sunday. The studios will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both days.

Local is for Lovers
Part of Somerville Local First's "Shift your Shopping" campaign, this is your chance to get holiday gifts from local Somerville businesses. There will also be a table where Somerville restaurants will be selling gift certificates. It's Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Center for Arts at the Armory.

Davis Flea Holiday Market
Taking place in Union Square, the flea market will feature vintage furniture, clothing, jewelry, posters, music, collectables and more. It's Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 3 Sanbourn Ct.

Artisan's Asylum Winter Open Studios
Artisan's Asylum is hosting its first ever winter open studios. The space is home to "makers": engineers, jewelers, crafters and artists. You can watch people welding things, building robots, printing jewelry on a 3D printer and more. It's Saturday at 12 p.m.

Rania Matar "A Girl In Her Room"
Photographer Rania Matar, whose "A Girl In Her Room" exhibit depicts teenage girls from Massachusetts and Lebanon in their bedrooms, will be at The Center for Arabic Culture, at The Center for Arts at the Armory, Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. She'll be discussing her work and signing books.

Story Slam: Aliens
On Saturday, storyteller Brendyn Schneider and UFO investigator Steve Firmani will tell their stories. It's at Rosebud Diner from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

SLAM Holiday Artist Market
Another chance to get "jewelry, pottery, glass, metal, textiles, sculpture, painting, photography, wearable art and so much more." It's Saturday at The Burren at 12 p.m.
