The recognition is based entirely on anonymous employee feedback gathered through Energage’s survey, which measures employees' experiences of workplace culture rather than financial performance or management evaluation.
Sonesta is one of the largest hotel chains in the United States, with locations outside of the country’s borders as well. The company was founded in 1937 when real estate mogul Sonny Sonnabend purchased the Preston Beach Hotel in Swampscott. In 1956, Sonnabend merged his portfolio with the Childs Restaurant Company to form the Hotel Corporation of America. The founder’s three sons took over the business after his death in 1964 and they soon rebranded to the company's current name, which combines “Sonny” with their mother’s name, Esther.
