Margaret Ann Oakes, 68, of Milford, CT, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Known as “Peggy” to family and friends, she was born on May 24, 1957, in Washington, D.C., to the late Walter and Eleanor West. She was the devoted wife of Clifford M. Oakes for over 41 years.
Peggy served the Milford community with dedication for more than two decades as an employee at the Milford Board of Education. During that time, she formed lasting friendships and found a second family through her work. As Grants Supervisor for the Milford School System, she took immense pride in ensuring resources were directed where they mattered most—supporting students and those in greatest need.
A passionate advocate for giving back, Peggy was deeply committed to local charities. She regularly participated in Giving Trees for families during the holidays, helped fill backpacks for low-income students, and supported countless programs throughout the years. Her generosity extended beyond her community, as she also opened her home to host two exchange students from Spain while they studied abroad.

In her leisure time, Peggy enjoyed watching bull riding, ice skating, and football, especially cheering for the Patriots and the KC Chiefs. She also loved reading on her Kindle, crocheting, and playing mahjong. Above all, she was known for her kindness, compassion, and selflessness. Family was always her greatest joy, and she considered her most meaningful roles to be those of a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud Nonnie to her grandchildren.
The family would like to take a moment to commend Peggy for the remarkable strength and courage she showed in her battle with cancer. She faced every challenge with courage and grace, always thinking of others before herself. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the dedicated team at Yale Smilow Cancer Center for the exceptional compassion and support.
