$1.4 Million Home Destroyed in Sudbury 3-Alarm Fire

SUDBURY, MA — The Sudbury Fire Department spent more than 12 hours on Thursday battling a fire in a large single-family home, set back nearly a half-mile from the roadway.

Firefighters responded to 10 Brimstone Lane shortly before 2 p.m., alerted by a UPS driver who saw fire coming from the home and called 911. A third alarm was struck, adding additional apparatus and manpower to the scene, said Fire Chief William Miles.

High winds, extreme cold, and the remote setting of the home made firefighting efforts difficult. Firefighters battled from the exterior for most of the day before they were forced to enter the home late Thursday to quell flames between the basement and first floor. The fire was declared out at 2:30 a.m. Friday.

The house, valued at $1.4 million, is a total loss and was condemned by the Sudbury building inspector Friday morning, said Miles in a release.

No residents were injured. One firefighter sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening early Friday morning.

Firefighters from Wayland, Weston, Framingham, and Marlborough responded to the scene, while firefighters from Hudson, Stow, Lincoln, and Concord provided station coverage to Sudbury.

"This was a complex firefighting operation, made difficult by the weather conditions, narrow roadway, and long driveway," Chief Miles said in a statement. "What is most important is that no one was seriously injured. I am very grateful to our firefighters and our neighboring departments for battling the elements and working together to fight this large fire."

Route 20/Boston Post Road was closed between Peakham Road and Bowditch Road for nearly eight hours, and motorists were detoured. The roadway re-opened overnight.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Sudbury Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office.
