It Costs A Smoker In Mass. About $43,082 Per Year, $2.2 Million Over a Lifetime

Massachusetts is nearly the most expensive state to be a smoker, according to a recent report by WalletHub.

MASSACHUSETTS — Want another reason to quit smoking besides the fact that it does a number on your health. It's a mighty costly habit, particularly in Massachusetts.

With economic and societal costs factored in, the cost of smoking is estimated at more than $300 billion and rising. It shocking numbers prompted personal finance website WalletHub to conduct a study and release its report on The Real Cost of Smoking by State, and Massachusetts ranked at number 50, with only New York lower than the Bay State.

Analysts from WalletHub calculated monetary losses, which include lifetime and annual costs of cigarettes, healthcare, income losses and other costs brought on by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Here is the Financial Cost of Smoking in Massachusetts (1=Lowest, 25=Avg.), according to WalletHub's findings:

  • Out-of-Pocket Cost per Smoker – $172,189 (Rank: 50th)
  • Financial-Opportunity Cost per Smoker – $1,450,447 (Rank: 50th)
  • Health-Care Cost per Smoker – $280,080 (Rank: 51st)
  • Income Loss per Smoker – $279,737 (Rank: 45th)
  • Other Costs per Smoker – $14,744 (Rank: 46th)
  • Total Cost Over a Lifetime per Smoker: $2,197,197
  • Total Cost per Year per Smoker: $43,082
