SUDBURY, MA — It's a relatively hot Wednesday afternoon in the area, but luckily we're not experiencing wildfires. Apocalyptic images are emerging from the West Coast showing cities and towns enveloped in smoke and lit by orange flames burning nearby.

Closer to home, a police officer in Sudbury on Tuesday night made a jarring discovery after driving over a hole in the ground along Benson's Hill Road near the town center. The void turned out to be a sinkhole left by a 100-foot-long metal drain pipe that had corroded.

Fortunately, Sudbury public works officials already knew about the problem, and will vote on a proposed fix at this Saturday's Town Meeting.
