The Zoning Board of Appeals on Monday approved a larger number of campers for a proposed scholarship program.

SUDBURY, MA — Camp Sewataro is about a to get a little bit bigger. On Monday night, the Zoning Board of Appeals approved a change in the camp's permit to allow more campers, creating the opportunity for the camp to give out scholarships.
The ZBA expanded Sewataro's permit to allow 650 campers over the original 600 allowed. In turn, the camp will be able to offer 50 scholarships to reduce prices by 50 to 75 percent. Sewataro offers sessions ranging from two to eight weeks for kids in kindergarten to 8th grade, and prices range from $1,620 to $5,355 for those sessions.
Camp Setawaro Community Liason Kristen Drummey said the guidelines for scholarships would be posted online soon. In the meantime, town social worker Bethany Hadvab is working to identify local kids for scholarships.

Sudbury acquired the 44-acre Sewataro property for $11 million last June during a special Town Meeting. Since then, the town has hired a management company to oversee the property and run the camp. The town expects to earn about $345,000 in revenue from Sewataro each year.
The town held a public open house in November for residents, but has not opened the property for any public use yet, except groups. Once the property has been fully upgraded, the public will be able to use it like a town park.
