Massachusetts Voters for Animals Endorse Senator Lewis

Group says "Lewis is a compassionate and determined advocate for animal rights."

BOSTON -- Massachusetts Voters for Animals (MVA) has endorsed State Senator Jason Lewis for re-election in the 5th Middlesex District, citing his strong record of advocacy on behalf of animal welfare and protection in the Commonwealth.

“Massachusetts Voters for Animals is delighted to once again endorse Senator Jason Lewis. Senator Lewis is a compassionate and determined advocate for animal rights,” said Marge Peppercorn, a member of the MVA Steering Committee. “He has led multiple efforts on animal protection legislation over the years, including restricting the sale of ivory and rhino horn and prohibiting the strict confinement of farm animals. We know he will continue to be a strong voice for animals here in Massachusetts.”

“I’m proud to have the support of Massachusetts Voters for Animals,” said Senator Jason Lewis. “Animals deserve to be treated humanely and to be protected from cruelty and abuse, whether they are our beloved pets, farm animals, or wild animals. I will continue to advocate for legislation that supports animal rights and welfare.”

During his time in the state legislature, Senator Lewis has championed several major bills to protect and improve animal welfare in the Commonwealth and beyond, including:

● Legislation to prevent the slaughter of elephants and rhinos in Africa by curtailing the ivory and rhino horn market in Massachusetts, which contributes to the illegal wildlife trade and criminal poaching operations (passed the Senate in 2018).
● Legislation that was signed into law in 2014 to end the shark fin trade in Massachusetts in order to discourage the cruel practice of shark finning and protect the ecological balance in our oceans.
● Legislation to prohibit the cruel confinement of farm animals, including pigs, calves, and egg laying hens (overwhelmingly approved by Massachusetts voters in a ballot referendum in 2016).
● An Act to Protect Animal Welfare and Safety (PAWS II), which strengthens animal welfare protections for pets and other animals, and was recently signed into law by Governor Baker.

Massachusetts Voters for Animals is a nonpartisan advocacy organization that supports candidates for office based upon their support for animal protection. They also maintain a “legislative scorecard” and track animal welfare bills through the legislative process in order to educate and inform Massachusetts voters.
