The Happy Strummers of New Pond Village

When Trudy Walsh arrived at New Pond Village in 2023, she brought with her a lifelong love of music that began in childhood. Years earlier, she had been inspired by a 2015 article about a ukulele club at the Needham Senior Center. Curious to learn more, Trudy visited the group with a friend and the experience made a strong impression. Soon after, she helped launch a similar ukulele program in Dover, one that is still active today.

After becoming a resident at New Pond Village, Trudy continued to create opportunities for connection through music. She founded a choir that rehearses weekly and hosts lively monthly sing-alongs. In spring 2024, she expanded these efforts by introducing The Happy Strummers of NPV, a ukulele group that now includes eight residents and meets every week.

With support from the Needham Music Store, residents were able to easily access instruments and begin playing. The group shares themed programs each month and performs regularly across all neighborhoods in the community, bringing smiles to residents in memory care, assisted living and independent living, especially during holiday celebrations.

The Happy Strummers embody the joy of learning, creativity and community. Their music lifts spirits, strengthens connections and proves that it is never too late to try something new.
