WALTHAM, MA – A Pennsylvania federal appeals court judge on the president's short list for the U.S. Supreme Court once called the Watch City home.
Thomas Hardiman, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was born in Winchester and grew up in Waltham, spending summers working as a driver for his father's cab and school transportation company, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Hardiman was the first in his family to graduate from college, the Post-Gazette reported, graduating from Notre Dame before attending law school at Georgetown University.

Hardiman is one of three candidates on Trump's short list for the nomination, and is reportedly among two favorites, according to media reports cited by the Boston Globe Wednesday. Of note, the Post-Gazette reports that those who know Hardiman describe him as more moderate than some of the other judges the president has considered.
Trump is considering two other appeals court judges, Neil Gorsuch and William Pryor, for the post. He has previously sought to appoint someone in the vein of Antonin Scalia, a famed conservative who died last year after serving on the Supreme Court for close to three decades.
