Waltham Fire Responds To Trash Truck Fire On 95

The trash truck was completely engulfed in flames Tuesday.

WALTHAM, MA — There was a trash truck fully engulfed in fire on Route 128 North Bound after the Mass Pike near Waltham and Weston Tuesday morning. And it resulted in serious delays on I-95 as firefighters and state troopers responded.

The call came in around 10:48 a.m., according to fire officials. By the time Waltham Fire (who sent three engines to help Weston Fire) got there the driver was out of the truck. No word on whether there were any injuries. Fire officials used a special foam line to cover the truck, said Lt. Scott Perry of the Waltham Fire department.

It's unclear what caused the fire in this instance, but the moral of the story when it comes to trash trucks aflame is often: Don't throw burning things into the trash.

"If something's in there that's combustible or smoldering already that's what does it," said Perry. The movement of the truck means it's constantly pulling air into the truck which can stoke embers if there's something smoldering. It's a recipe for a fire.

I-95 was at a standstill with all lanes closed, but within the hour two lanes were up and running. By mid afternoon the ramp, which had been closed for clean up were back open.
