English at Large is a nonprofit that provides individual and small group instruction through a volunteer network to adult immigrants and other newcomers who want to acquire English language skills as they adapt to life in the United States. Our vision is that newcomers to the United States will develop the English language skills and acquire the cultural knowledge needed to fully engage in their communities and fulfill their life goals.

English At Large is currently looking for individuals that are interested in becoming an English tutor, a conversation group facilitator, or an intake assessor.

We are looking for volunteers that are able to access Littleton, Boxborough, Acton, Carlisle, Concord, Lincoln, Bedford, Billerica, Wilmington, Burlington, Lexington, Waltham, North Reading, Reading, Wakefield, Woburn, Stoneham, Winchester, Medford, Arlington, and/or Belmont.

English At Large Volunteer Roles

One-to-One Tutor: To be an English tutor, you don’t need previous teaching experience. You don’t even need to know another language. You need only desire, commitment, and training.

As a volunteer one-to-one tutor with English At Large, you will be:

· Trained in a 12-hour workshop series to learn the essentials of a successful tutoring relationship.

· Matched with an adult learner in your area.

· Encouraged to work with your learner for 1.5 - 2 hours per week, always in a public place--usually a library. (You and your learner will agree on time and place.)

· Expected to make a minimum commitment of 100 contact hours with your

· Certified as a tutor by English At Large and ProLiteracy America.

Conversation Group Facilitator: Facilitate group meetings which advanced ESOL learners practice English conversation. This is a weekly, 1.5-hour commitment for a minimum of 3 months.

Intake Assessor: Interview prospective learners and test their English level and to determine the most suitable English At Large program for their needs. This role has a flexible schedule where volunteers can do as many or as few assessments as they like per month (minimum of two per month).
