Waltham High Alum Named Brandeis Athletic Director

Lynne Dempsey was named to the permanent position after serving as the acting director since September.

WALTHAM, MA - Lynne Dempsey is no longer "acting."

Brandeis University announced Tuesday that Dempsey has officially been named the school's eighth Director of Athletics, a role she was serving in the interim after Sheryl Souza took over as Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs last fall.

Dempsey was Souza's top assistant for 11 years.

"Lynne's dedication to Brandeis Athletics and our student-athletes is tremendous," Sousa said in a release on the Brandeis website. "She has taken more and more responsibility, while continuing to forge valuable connections with students, parents and alumni alike. I am thrilled that she will continue to lead the next era of Brandeis Athletics."

Dempsey, a 1989 graduate of Waltham High School and member of the Brandeis University Class of 1993, played soccer, basketball and softball for the Judges. As a senior, she was awarded the Max I. Silber award as the top female athlete.

After she graduated, she worked for the university part time and in 1994 took on a full-time role in the department of athletics. Dempsey has served as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics since 2011.

"This past year was one of the most fulfilling of my career," Dempsey said in the release. "I appreciate the opportunity to continue in this role and continue to give back to Brandeis Athletics in every way I can."

Following Dempsey's appointment as acting Director of Athletics, Brandeis hosted two NCAA events – the first two rounds of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer championships in November and the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing championships in March. During the 2015-2016 school year, the women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams received national rankings.
