Youth Are The Key To Success

I have come to realize that in order for WaylandCares to be successful in our mission, we need more young people, especially high school students, to become partners with us.

While at the CADCA (Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America) Conference this week with new , there were over a hundred and fifty students in attendance who will participate in CADCA's Youth Leadership Initiative this week and then return home to become "change agents" in their community.

WaylandCares has a group of "change agents," students that have been instrumental in changing the course of WaylandCares since they attended the CADCA conference in Pheonix Arizona in 2010, and they have been joined by students who attended the Youth to Youth Conference in the summer of 2011. Together they have worked hard on substance-free events like STOMP, 5th Quarter, Open Mic Night, and the very WAYGLO dance. Plans are underway for another fun event, and I am sure that they would welcome some additional "change agents" to help make it another successful night.

Being a member of the WaylandCares Youth Group isn't just about putting on substance-free events. As "change agents" they worked together to prepare and present the YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) data at the “In Our Own Words” presentation last November. The students are making PSA's (Public Service Announcments) and preparing YRBS data on bullying and violence to present at the Wellness Summit on March 18. They will also be presenting YRBS data to parents of elementary school age children this spring. The Youth Group meets right after school on Wednesday's with WaylandCares Youth Coordinators, Jared Walsh and Christopher Taylor. If any high school students want to join this group they should stop by the WaylandCares office at the high school South Building (room 137 near the Math Office) or see Chris or Jared. Together you can make a difference in Wayland.
