Starting May 7, two Wayland businesses will be participating in the 13th annual <a href="http://www.bostonbakesforbreastcancer.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer</a>. During this event, participating businesses create a special dessert to include on the menu, and proceeds from that dessert will benefit cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc., a newly formed non-profit breast cancer organization dedicated to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. The event runs May 7-May 13, just in time to treat Mom to a nice dinner and dessert for Mother's Day. Participating restaurants and bakeries in Wayland include:

Maypole dancing is a centuries-old tradition celebrated on May Day. It is believed to have started in Roman Britain around 2000 years ago, when soldiers celebrated the arrival of spring by dancing around decorated trees, thanking their goddess Flora. These days, dancers weave ribbons around a pole rather than a tree, celebrating the arrival of spring.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 Annual Town Meeting, Wayland High School Field House
During the May 2022 Annual Town Meeting, Wayland’s citizens approved a resolution endorsing the use of wireless electronic voting for all sessions of all town meetings through fiscal year 2027. Instead of shouting out Aye or No, raising our hands, or standing to be counted, we’ll use electronic handsets to register our votes quickly, accurately, and privately during the upcoming Annual Town Meeting. The handsets look a bit like a TV remote control, but instead of pushing buttons to change channels, we push buttons to vote: the 1 button for Yes, or the 2 button for No. Your vote is displayed on your handset’s screen and wirelessly transmitted to a computer that counts votes and displays results for the Moderator to announce. Nothing but these totals is permanently recorded, so your vote will remain private. Town Meeting will be held in the High School Field House. You can use any check-in station; waiting in one line based on the first letter of your last name is no longer required. As you’re checking in, you’ll be issued a handset for your exclusive use during that session. Voting with a handset issued to anyone else is strictly forbidden.If your phone, tablet, or laptop supports Wi-Fi, please disable this feature, as doing so will enhance performance of the electronic voting system. Before each vote, the Moderator will summarize the motion or amendment being decided. She’ll then announce the beginning of a 30 second interval during which you can convey your vote, and a “voting light” near the Moderator will be illuminated. To vote Yes, push your handset’s 1 button while the “voting light” is illuminated. To vote No, push your handset’s 2 button while the “voting light” is illuminated. If you accidentally push the wrong button, you can change your vote by pushing the correct button while the “voting light” is illuminated. If you don’t want to participate in a particular vote, don’t push any buttons while the “voting light” is illuminated; if you don’t want to participate but accidentally push the 1 button or the 2 button, you can clear your unintentional vote by pushing the 3 button while the “voting light” is illuminated. When the 30 second interval is over, the “voting light” will be extinguished, and the Moderator will announce that the vote is complete; shortly thereafter, the Moderator will announce the results. You should check-in at least 5 minutes before a vote to be certain that your handset can be used in that vote. If pushing your handset’s 1 button or 2 button during a vote produces a can’t vote yet message on its display, please alert the Moderator, and then go to the Help Desk, where you’ll be provided with a paper ballot to record your vote. If you inadvertently turn your handset off by pushing the power button in its lower-right corner, its display will be blank; push the power button briefly to turn your handset back on. Pushing any of your handset’s other buttons during the voting interval will not change your vote, but for peace of mind, your handset will encourage you to Re-Vote; push the 1 button for Yes or the 2 button for No. If you temporarily leave your seat during the meeting, please keep your handset with you. If you’re visiting the restroom, you can leave your handset with the Exit Desk staff. When you leave the Field House – either during a session or at the close of a session – please place your handset in one of the bins at the Exit Desks. If you forget to turn in your handset, we’ll give you a call the next day and ask you to return it. Every handset will be tested before each session of Town Meeting, so the probability of a handset failing is very low. That said, if pushing your handset’s 1 button or 2 button during a vote does not produce an Yes or No on its display, please alert the Moderator, and then go to the Help Desk, where you’ll be provided with a paper ballot to record your vote, and you’ll be issued a new handset. We don’t expect this to happen, but like the Boy Scouts, we’ll be prepared. If you’re physically unable to use a handset to vote, inform the person who checks you in, and you’ll be seated in an area where your votes will be manually counted by Help Desk personnel. If you’re wondering how much radio energy is used by a handset to convey your vote wirelessly, it’s less than 1% that of a typical cell phone and only for brief instants, employing the same frequencies used for Wi-Fi wireless internet access. Author Michael Tougias will be giving a slide presentation on his book Extreme Survival: Lessons From Those Who Have Triumphed Against All Odds. This event will be held at Sudbury Grange, 326 Concord Road, Sudbury on Wednesday evening, May 6, 2026, at 7 PM. This free program is being presented by the Friends of the Goodnow Library and is made possible by a generous bequest from Stella and Frank Ricciardi to the Friends of the Goodnow Library. Free parking is available behind Sudbury Town Hall. In his book, Extreme Survival, Tougias shares what he has learned about decision making under pressure and the mindsets and techniques survivors used to channel their energy into proactive decisions that saved their lives. He demonstrates that the same techniques can help anyone be more resilient when feeling overwhelmed or facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge in their personal or professional life. The methods shared can also be used by anyone who has an important goal. They provide inspiration and step by step practices to overcome obstacles and achieve a person’s full potential.
Tougias uses slides from some of the survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal.
The author has interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds, and has researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. He supplements their stories with a handful of first person accounts from some of the toughest survivors in history. Some of the survivors from history include John McCain, Mary Rowlandson (captive during King Philip’s Indian War), Howard Blackburn, Captain Bligh, Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, mountainman Hugh Glass, Admiral Byrd, Shackleton, WWII pilot James Whittaker, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK (PT109), USS Indianapolis survivors, and many more from mountain climbers to early explorers of the new world.
Tougias has written seven survival and rescue books and Extreme Survival is the culmination of his life’s work of interviewing and researching the toughest survivors over the past three decades. He has earned critical acclaim and literary awards for his 30 bestselling non-fiction narratives. Some of his books include The Finest Hours (now a Disney movie), A Storm Too Soon, Overboard and The Waters Between Us. Founded on a Vision of Radical Welcome and Music With a Message, Sound &amp; Spirit Holds Anniversary Concerts in Natick on May 8 and 9, 2026

113 Members Range in Age From 8 to 90; Families Perform Side-by-Side

In 2011, as movements like Occupy Wall Street pushed Americans everywhere to question who gets heard and who belongs, a small group of singers gathered around a dining room table in Natick, Massachusetts, asked their own version of that same question:&nbsp;

What if a community choir were truly built on community. No audition required—just choir folk from the community who love to sing.&nbsp;

And what if, instead of separating children, teens, and adults, their voices came together in one intergenerational ensemble?

From that question, <a href="https://www.soundandspirit.net/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sound &amp; Spirit</a> was born.&nbsp; The vibrant, intergenerational choir bringing together singers from ages 8 to over 90 was founded on a vision that extended beyond music to something deeper: a space where no one is excluded, and a community rooted in joy, growth, and belonging.

At the heart of Sound &amp; Spirit is a simple but powerful philosophy: radical welcome. <a href="https://www.soundandspirit.net/artisticteam" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Creative Director Kate Leavey and Associate Director Cathi Ianno</a> invite members to show up fully as they are—finding not just a place to sing, but a place to belong and to grow. The result is what many describe as a “Cheers effect,” where every voice is known, valued, and missed when absent. 
That sense of belonging is reinforced through the choir’s signature approach to “music with a message:”
<ul><li>Each concert is built around a theme, weaving together diverse musical genres to explore ideas that resonate deeply with both performers and audiences.</li><li>From its first performance, “Songs for a Revolution,” to its upcoming fifteenth anniversary concert, Sound &amp; Spirit uses music not only to entertain, but to reflect, connect, and inspire.</li><li>It views music as a force for good, as exemplified by the “Gifts for Good” initiative—spotlighting organizations making a difference and amplifying causes for positive change.&nbsp;</li></ul>
For many members, the impact goes far beyond the stage. Over the years, singers have found the confidence to face long-held fears, the courage to try something new, and the joy of connecting across generations in ways few other experiences allow. Families have performed side by side. Friendships have formed across decades of age difference. And individuals who once doubted their place in a performance setting have discovered their voice—both musically and personally.
To mark fifteen years bridging generations and inspiring change, it will hold concerts May 8 and 9th in Natick featuring a selection of favorite songs from past performances that offer a window into the choir’s evolution and a reaffirmation of the values that have sustained it.
Fifteen years after that first question was asked around a dining room table, Sound &amp; Spirit continues to answer it in the same way—by bringing people together in song, and in doing so, creating ripples of connection that extend far beyond the music itself.
