A View of South Street, Then and Now

Photos show the changes of this Westborough block over the past century.

Happy Monday, Patchers!

The photo above should be familiar to everyone. It is a view of South Street from the rotary.

The building on the right, where is located today, is the C.S. Henry block - mentioned briefly in . Originally, two others buildings stood in this location, known as the S.G. Henry Building and the Eagle Block, but both buildings were destroyed by fire in 1873. According to The History of Westborough, Massachusetts: Part 1, the new C.S. Henry Block was constructed within that same year.

In front of the C.S. Henry Block, you will see a fountain in the road where a horse may be drinking some water. This fountain was removed for a period of time (around when the rotary was constructed), but it was restored by the Westborough Historical Commission in the 1980s and is located in approximately the same location today.

Another interesting photo I included was taken by during the mid 1980s when she was publishing a similar Then and Now-style column. She was able to capture the construction of 21 South St. (which interestingly, the town property records claim was built in 1900…someone might need to check that) as well as the former Sunoco Gas Station which stood where the former once stood (visible on the very left edge of the "then" photo) and 7-Eleven stands today.
