Woman Charged With OUI; Car Hit Pole That Knocked Out Power in Westborough

A Hopkinton woman is facing OUI charges stemming from an accident that occurred that sliced a pole in half and knocked down its wires.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — A woman from Hopkinton is facing charges stemming from an accident in Westborough that knocked out power for part of the town earlier this month.

Police responded on April 13, around 1:05 p.m., to 105 West Main St., where an accident involving a 2001 Ford Explorer and utility pole had occurred. The pole had been snapped in half with wires hanging in the roadway.

Jill L. Welch, 59, 9 Grove St. Hopkinton, was standing outside the SUV with minor visible, and internal injuries. She was treated by paramedics from the Westborough Fire Department and transported to U. Mass Medical Hospital.

The crash knocked out power throughout part of the town for a couple of hours.

Welch initially told the officers hat she had looked down to answer her cell phone and then struck the pole.

An investigation by Off. Tyson Delongresulted in Welch being charged with a marked lanes violation and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcoholic beverages.

She will be arraigned at a later date.
