Girls Take Second at Class Meet
Weston girls finished in second place at Saturday's Eastern Massachusetts Cross Country Championship, and will go onto the all-state meet next weekend in Gardner.
The Weston HS girls cross country team ran to a strong second place finish in the Eastern MA Class 5 State Cross Country Championship at Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday, Nov. 13, placing three girls in the top 10 and finishing with a score of 60 points.
The first place team from Hamilton/Wenham scored 42 points and placed six girls in the top 15 making them a tough team to beat. Olivia Brackett finished first for the team in fourth place with a time of 19:26. Charlotte Walmsley place sixth in 19:49 and Abigail Pohl finished in eighth place with a time of 19:54. Rookie freshman Zoe Snow finished just shy of a medal in 16th place with a time of 20:33.
Rounding out the scorers for the team was Edom Wessenyeleh, who had been injured earlier this season but finished strong with a time 21:20 for 26th place.

Also competing for the team and turning in strong performances was Lena Makino in 22:09 and Taylor Reeves with a time of 22:24. The team's second place finish qualifies them to compete in the all state meet next weekend in Gardner.
In the boys race, junior Dave Freeman and sophomore Matt Hertzig turned in stellar performances and qualified as individuals to go to the state meet.

However, the team finished in sixth place, just missing out on qualifying for the wild card slot. Freeman finished the race in 17:21 to take 17th place and Herzig finished in 19th place with a time of 17:27. Third man Geoffrey Pendergast finished 51st for the team with a time of 18:07 followed by Connor Maloney in 18:13 for 54th place.
The fifth scorer for the team finishing in 64th place was Robert Charpie who finished with a time of 18:21. Adam Dvorak and Brendan Eappen also competed and finished with times of 19:11 and 20:02.
Next week's meet in Gardner will bring together teams from across the state. While the field will broaden, the eastern region is where the toughest competition is found. Both the girls' team and the boys' individual qualifiers will likely be facing the same top competitors in this final meet of the season.
