Colarusso Will Be Full Time Representative and Swears Off Pension: Press Release

Stoneham Selectwoman and candidate for State Representative Caroline Colarusso announced that she will be swearing off the state's pension.

Stoneham, MA — Today Selectwoman and candidate for State Representative Caroline Colarusso promised to be a full time representative for the people of Winchester and Stoneham and took the bold step of swearing off the state pension.

“Our towns are facing some serious problems. It will take full-time Representative to get the job done,” said Colarusso. “Whether it is dealing with chapter 40B housing problems, fighting for more local aid, reviving our economy or requiring accountability of our tax dollars, you can count on me to be working on the issues full-time for Stoneham and Winchester.”

Colarusso is pledging that her priorities will not be divided. She believes that Representatives receive a salary for a full-time position, so she plans to earn it by working non-stop. Colarusso has more than proven she will put in the effort. As a Selectwoman, she held regular office hours unlike the incumbent State Representative who gets paid to do that.

“I will be able to give my full attention to solving constituent problems, holding office hours, attending community events and meeting with people one on one,” said Colarusso. My priorities will not be divided between the people of this district and a legal practice.”

For several decades, Stoneham and Winchester have been served by full time Representatives. Both Paul Casey and Jason Lewis served the district full time.

Colarusso is also promising to opt out of the state pension system.

“Being elected to office is not supposed to be about enriching oneself. That’s why I am promising to decline a pension,” said Colarusso.

Colarusso believes that state politicians should not be eligible for pensions. The pension system is unsustainable and by removing elected officials will help depoliticize the system. If officials are no longer part of the system, they will be able to make sound decisions without consideration of self-interest.

“I want voters once again trust and have confidence in their Beacon Hill Representatives. Taxpayers should know that their funds are being spent appropriately and not wasted on outrageous pensions for politicians,” said Colarusso.
