Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become more than a day of appreciation for St. Patrick. The holiday has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish.
Massachusetts will have no problem getting into the Irish spirit, as the state has the highest percentage of residents with Irish ancestry in the nation. About 21.3 percent of residents claimed Irish ancestry, according to census data.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports 26.3 percent of the Winchester population claims Irish ancestry. Of a total population of 21,837, about 5,738 people in Winchester are Irish.
Winchester was left out the list of the top-50 most Irish towns in Massachusetts by WCVB, but census data reveals the Town should be number 34 on the list.

White Island Shores in Plymouth was found to be the most Irish town in the state by WCVB, with 41.9 percent of its population claiming Irish ancestry.
Tuesday, March 17 isn’t the only day to appreciate Irish heritage. The entire month of March was named Irish-American Heritage Month by Congress in 1991.
