📰 News we're reading

1. Hoping to get in contact with homeowner… City Council continues Green Street public nuisance proceedings (homenewshere.com) — Woburn's City Council is pressing ahead with public nuisance proceedings over a long-neglected house at 33 Green Street, after months of complaints about overgrowth, wildlife and possible health hazards. Councilors will continue the hearing to September 15 while checking tax status, alternative contact information, and inspection reports, aiming to push the owner toward cleanup or consider stronger city action. Neighbors say the vacant property is spreading weeds, attracting animals, and making the sidewalk difficult to use.

2. Traditional plastic forks shed harmful microplastics. Plastic created from sugar is an alternative (texarkanagazette.com) — Right here in Woburn, a research lab is turning sugar-based pellets into compostable forks, films, and food packaging designed to break down instead of shedding microplastics. CJ Biomaterials' Woburn facility is experimenting with plant-based polymers that can handle everyday use but decompose in compost within months. Their work is drawing global attention as policymakers and companies search for alternatives to traditional plastics.

3. Driver charged in fatal OUI crash in North Reading, Massachusetts that left father, young daughter dead due in court (wcvb.com) — A man charged in a deadly suspected OUI crash in North Reading is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court, tying this tragic regional case directly to the local courthouse. Prosecutors say a 21-year-old driver rear-ended a stopped car, killing a father and his 8-year-old daughter from Andover. Witnesses and first responders tried to rescue them as the vehicle burned.

4. Somerville organizations awarded funding from MassCEC (thesomervilletimes.com) — A Woburn-based company, Daqus Energy, is receiving $100,000 in new state climatetech tax incentives to advance its next‑generation battery materials, part of a $27.2 million package for 18 firms statewide. The funding aims to grow clean‑energy jobs, expand manufacturing, and keep cutting‑edge energy technology development rooted in Massachusetts.

5. TechAMP Helps Manufacturing Workers Take the Next Step (uml.edu) — A Woburn manufacturing technician at Mide Technology used UMass Lowell's TechAMP program to redesign how piezoelectric strain sensors are tested, creating more realistic, reliable results for customers. She and other workers from area companies gained new technical skills, capstone experience, and potential college credit pathways to advance their manufacturing careers.
