Woburn, Eversource May Settle On Permit Denial

Eversource sued after Woburn denied the proposed project, which would have spanned four towns and an 8.5-mile stretch

WOBURN, MA -- City Council will meet in executive session next week to consider an out-of-court settlement with Eversource. The utility filed a lawsuit against after Woburn City Council denied a special permit to Eversource Tuesday, which wanted to install a 345 kilovolt high voltage transmission line underground from the Eversource building at Horn Pond. The transmission lines would have continued along Lake Avenue, Pickering Street and Border Street, then crossed over Main Street and continued into Stoneham, Winchester and Wakefield.

According to the Daily Times Chronicle, which first reported this story, the city solicitor and Eversource have reached a tentative settlement which needs final approval from City Council. During the public hearing leading up to last May's denial, Eversource argued that any local denial would likely be overturned on appeal. The utility says the $138 million project is crucial for meeting growing power demand.
